Veniamin Pavlovich Tschebotajew ( Russian Вениамин Павлович Чеботаев , English transcription Veniamin Pavlovich Chebotayev or Chebotaev * 27. August 1938 in Kuibyshev , † 1. September 1992 in Tucson , Arizona ) was a Russian physicist who with laser spectroscopy dealt.

Life

The family moved to Novosibirsk during World War II . He studied there and became a professor at the Novosibirsk State University . There he dealt with gas lasers in the early 1960s .

He was particularly known for his work on frequency stabilization of gas lasers with saturable absorbers, methods of saturation spectroscopy such as nonlinear Ramsey resonances and two-photon absorption . He published a fundamental work in which he predicted Doppler-free two-photon absorption as early as 1970, but it remained unnoticed in the West for a long time. In 1974 three working groups in the West independently confirmed the effect.

The introduction of a gas cell at low pressure into the laser resonator with resonance absorption of the laser radiation (with generation of an inverse Lamb dip ) was introduced independently by Chebotayev in Novosibirsk, Wladilen Stepanowitsch Letochow in Moscow and Michael Skolnick at Perkin-Elmer in 1967/68. In 1969, Chebotayev and Letochov proposed the method of saturation-absorption spectroscopy.

In 1984 he received the Charles Hard Townes Award . In 1978 he received the Lenin Prize .

In 1992 he became a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences .

He died of a heart attack while attending a lecture at the University of Arizona in Tucson. At the time of his death he was a Humboldt Professorship in Munich and a visiting professor at Yale University with William R. Bennett (with whom he had already been an exchange researcher at Yale in 1966) for half a year .
