The Wensleydale Beacon (English for beacon of Wensleydale ) is a 110 m high hill on Deception Island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It rises just north of Primero de Mayo Bay on the west bank of Port Foster .
The British navigator Henry Foster mapped it during his voyage with the HMS Chanticleer from 1827 to 1831 . Lieutenant Commander David Neil Penfold (1913-1991) of the Royal Navy , who was involved in surveying Deception Island between 1948 and 1949, named him after the Wensleydale river valley in North Yorkshire .
