Location of Werbig in Brandenburg

history

The name Werbig comes from the Slavic word "Werba" for the willow tree. It is a place of real Slavic origin.

Werbig probably belonged to the Knights Templar as early as 1244 , "one does not know since what time and by whose donation", who sold it in 1308 to the diocese of Lebus . For the end of the 14th century there is evidence that the residents of Werbig had to pay a special fishing tax for the Oderitz. This river no longer exists today.

In 1854 the place was hit by a severe flood of the Oder. The total damage was 3800 thalers.

In July 1880, at the intersection of the Royal Prussian Eastern Railway and the Eberswalde – Frankfurt (Oder) line  in Werbig, a tower station was opened. On June 24, 1942, a serious accident occurred in the passenger station. The locomotive of a through freight train had become self-employed and drove unmanned onto a stopping passenger train. Ten people were killed and 23 injured. At the beginning of 1945 the area around Werbig was one of the main theaters of fighting between the Wehrmacht and the Red Army

Incorporations

On July 1, 1950, the community of Langsow was created when the predecessor communities Alt Langsow and Neu Langsow merged. On January 1, 1962, Langsow was incorporated into Werbig.
