The Schelfstadt, originally the Schelfe , since 1349 also Neustadt , developed from the 11th century as an independent place and from 1705 as a city and became a district of Schwerin in 1832.

The Schwerin City Hospital, the Werder Clinic , was established in 1841 . In 1930/31 a new main building, the Hamann building, was added to the Demmler building. The clinic now had around 200 beds. From 1952 to 1976 it was the district hospital of the Schwerin district to ensure the mainstream care , which was medically managed from 1945 to 1974 by chief physician Ekkehard Schütze . The main building received an extension on the east side.

Around 1976 a new district hospital was built on Wismarschen Strasse , which became a medical center in 1999 and the Helios Kliniken Schwerin in 2004/05 . The orthopedics remained at the Werder Clinic. After the reunification , the facility last served as an orthopedic clinic until 2004, which then also became part of the Helios clinics.

The hospital consisted of two houses connected by an intermediate wing as well as the porter's house, the house of the chief doctor, the boiler house and the infirmary:

  • The three-storey 15-axis classicist hospital, the Demmler building from 1840 with 90 beds, was built on the initiative of Senator Strempel based on plans by Georg Adolf Demmler . It was one of the first hospital buildings in Mecklenburg. After 1930 the house was renovated.
  • The four to five storey main building from 1930/31, the Hamann building, was designed by Andreas Hamann in the Bauhaus style .
  • The former two-storey porter's house, Werderstrasse 28a.
  • The former home of the chief doctor, Barcastraße 7, dates from 1954.
  • The former boiler house, Hospitalstrasse 7, was converted into a residential building.
  • The former infirmary from 1901, Robert-Koch-Straße 22–34, with a striking brick facade and arched windows, was converted into a residential building.

The open spaces with plants, pathways and fencing at the hospital and in front of the former infirmary are also under monument protection.

The VR-Bank has been located in the converted and thoroughly renovated buildings since 2014. The planning architects Brenncke aimed for "the extensive restoration of the overall architectural appearance of the building ensemble from 1931". A single-storey new building was placed next to the Hamann building, which, thanks to its modern design with lots of glass and metal, is intended to be a symbol of “the third building era after Demmler and Hamann” - according to Joachim Brenncke.
