The Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium (WHG) is the youngest of the four high schools in the Wuerttemberg city of Göppingen and was founded in 1968 as a Progymnasium under construction in Göppingen-Holzheim under the direction of Claus Anshof . By 1974 a natural science high school had developed, which was able to move to Göppinger Jahnstraße in 1984. Since March 1975 the school has been named after the physicist, philosopher and Nobel Prize winner Werner Heisenberg . Heisenberg was personally present to give the name. In his celebratory speech he gave the school the quote from Hölderlin: "Seriously, the game and all work cheerfully". In the school foyer there is a bust of Heisenberg with an engraving of the same quote.

In the school year 2010/2011 around 1000 students in 40 classes were taught by 73 teachers at the WHG.

In the school year 2017/2018 there were 654 students in 26 classes, who were looked after by 58 teachers.

The high school is funded by the Association of Friends of the Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium e. V. , which was founded in 1982. It has almost 200 members and its motto is "To support means to ensure that something continues and stays in motion".

The Südstadt elementary school is located in the immediate vicinity of the school.

The new building was created through an extension in 2002/2003. Before the renovation, due to a lack of space, premises in the nearby agricultural school had to be rented for a few years. There is a photovoltaic system on the roof of the old building .

Other offers

  • Maltese School Medical Service
  • daily open all-day offer (in short: OGA)
  • daily cafeteria offer

The school offers various working groups:

particularities

  • The school has an orchard meadow on the footpath between the school and the Bergfeld district of Göppingen. This is used for illustrative purposes in biology.
  • The school has a sports hall and a gymnastics hall.
  • There is a hard court with a handball field and two basketball fields in the schoolyard .
  • At the entrance from Jahnstraße there are several surrealistic figures in front of the basement. Due to the slight slope, the ground floor of the building is one floor above the ground. It looks like the figures are supporting the ground floor.
  • The school has its own bus stop called "WHG" in Lessingstrasse, directly behind the grammar school, from which buses mostly depart on school days to the central bus station and to the communities south of Göppingen. Outside of the bus arrival and departure times, the bus stop serves as a parking lot.
