Werner Bergmann (agricultural scientist)

Werner Bergmann (born February 22, 1920 in Ludwigsstadt ; † June 28, 2013 in Jena ) was a German agricultural scientist .

Life

Bergmann graduated from high school in 1939. Soldier Bergmann was captured during the western campaign in May 1940. After his return from captivity in 1946, he completed an agricultural apprenticeship. He then studied in Jena and obtained his doctorate in 1953. agr. Until 1959 he worked as an assistant and senior assistant at the Agricultural-Chemical Institute of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena ; In 1957 he completed his habilitation there with the thesis "The determination of the nutrient needs of the soil". In 1959 he took over the management of the Institute for Agricultural Experiments and Investigations in Jena. In 1961 he was appointed professor by the GDR Academy of Agricultural Sciences . In 1972 the non-party miner was relieved of his position as director for political reasons and was not rehabilitated until 1990 by the Academy's executive committee. From 1978 on, after his retirement for health reasons , Bergmann, together with medical practitioners, devoted himself to questions about the importance of magnesium for human nutrition. Bergmann was considered the nestor of German plant nutrition and was the author of many specialist books on plant nutrition and fertilization. His main work "Nutritional Disorders in Cultivated Plants" appeared for the first time in 1983. Bergmann died in 2013 in Jena.
