Werner Groening

Werner Gröning (born March 29, 1926 in Berlin ; † March 8, 2009 ) was a German officer in the German People's Police (DVP) and from 1975 to 1986 the police chief of East Berlin .

Life

The son of a carpenter attended elementary school and high school with a high school diploma . During the war he was first an air force helper , then drafted into the Wehrmacht as a soldier .

After his release from captivity , he returned to Berlin and joined the German People's Police (DVP) and the KPD / SED in 1946 . He began his service in the DVP as a police sergeant on patrol duty in Berlin-Mitte. After attending the higher police school in Berlin-Kaulsdorf, he worked as a department head in the Berlin Police Headquarters (PdVP). In 1962 he became 1st Deputy Commander of the 1st Border Brigade, which guarded the state border in Berlin and was incorporated into the National People's Army in the same year . From 1965 to 1969 he was a colonel in command of this border brigade, which was renamed the border brigade “13. August ”received. Gröning studied at the Friedrich Engels Military Academy . Then he switched back to the German People's Police and became head of the main readiness department in the Ministry of the Interior (MdI). On June 26, 1973 he was appointed major general by Erich Honecker and deputy head of the main inspection in the Ministry of the Interior. From May 22, 1975 to January 6, 1986, he succeeded Horst Ende as President of the East Berlin People's Police and at the same time was a member of the Berlin SED district leadership. From 1976 to 1986 he was also a member of the city council of Berlin. On June 29, 1979 he was promoted to lieutenant general and from 1986 to 1989 was head of the training administration at the MdI.

He last lived as a pensioner in Zeuthen and was a member of the Society for Legal and Humanitarian Support eV Gröning died at the age of 82.
