Career

Grun played in his youth from 1954 to 1956 for his home club BSG activist Laubusch . In 1961 he was committed as a striker by the SC activist Brieske-Senftenberg . He made his debut in the GDR Oberliga on August 27, 1961, when he was in the starting line-up on matchday 14 in a 1-1 draw against SC Rotation Leipzig . He scored his first goal on the following day in the 31st minute in the game against SC Turbine Erfurt , which Cottbus lost 2-1. On October 29, 1961 (23rd matchday), Grun scored his first brace in the 4-1 win against BSG Motor Zwickau . Overall, he came in his first league season 1961/62 to nine hits in 25 missions. In the following season 1962/63 there were still seven goals in 21 games. At the end of the season, however, Brieske-Senftenberg finished last in the table and was relegated to the second-rate GDR league. Grun then went back to the BSG activist Laubusch, with whom he stayed until 1965 before he went to ASK Vorwärts Cottbus (or ASG). There he scored 14 goals, placing him in third place in the list of goalscorers of the East German League North Staffel. In 1966 Grun was hired by the newly founded BSG Energie Cottbus, where he was primarily used as a defender. In the 1967/68 season he scored ten goals in 30 games in the GDR league. He was able to maintain his high playing times in the following seasons. He also continued to score goals. In 1973 he was promoted to the top league with the club. There he completed 24 games in 1973/74 . After the season, Grun ended his career.

In addition, Werner Grun was part of the GDR Olympic preselection in 1964. However, he decided against participating in order to be able to complete his mining studies.
