Werner Grundmann

Werner Grundmann (born July 8, 1902 in Hohenofen, Silesia , today part of Przemków , Poland ; † September 14, 1987 in Oberstdorf ) was a German painter , art historian and author .

life and work

Born in Silesia, Grundmann, the son of a school principal, studied art history , painting and philosophy at the universities of Breslau and Berlin . Before World War II , he taught as an art teacher in Gleiwitz and other high schools. One of his students was the painter, graphic artist and sculptor Markus Lüpertz (* 1941) ¹, who is one of the most famous contemporary German artists today. After his escape, Grundmann settled with his wife Hedwig, b. Serbin, settled in Oberstdorf, where he taught at the grammar school from 1950. From 1953 to 1959 he was a member of the Oberstdorf local council. The award in 1975 was a sign of recognition for his 18 years of activity as a district archivist, for the book chronicles “ Landkreis Sonthofen ” and “Landkreis Ostallgäu” and for his art and local history publications (including the four-volume “Geschichte des Marktes Oberstdorf” as co-author) of the ring of honor of the Ostallgäu district . Two years later he was awarded the Oberstdorf Citizen's Medal as well as the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon and the title of honorary professor “in recognition of his special services to research and literary processing” .

At an early age he made numerous trips abroad, especially to France and Italy, where he created a large number of his watercolors and drawings. Later he devoted himself increasingly to landscape painting in oil.

After a stroke, he died on September 14, 1987 in the Oberstdorf hospital and was buried in the forest cemetery. Today a street in Oberstdorf is named after him.
