Werner group
Werner Group (* 24. November 1920 ; † 1. January 2009 ) was a German agronomist , the weak-growing cherries documents from the GiSelA bred family.
In 1963 Werner Gruppe was appointed to the University of Giessen , where he led the establishment of the "Institute for Fruit Growing" with test fields in Heldenbergen and Leihgestern .
Breeding program
From 1965 to 1971 over 800 inter- and intrasectional crosses were carried out. In the following years the most promising documents were selected.
In 1981 Gi 148/2 was found from a cross between Prunus cerasus and Prunus canescens . Under the current name of GiSelA 5, it is the most widely planted cherry rootstock in Europe. The name Gisela stands for " Gi Essener- Sel ektion- A lead castle" and comes from Gruppes assistant Hanna Schmidt ago, later to the Federal Institute for Plant Breeding Research was Ahrensburg and continued the work there.
