career

Werner Heilig's football career began in 1933 in the Eintracht Frankfurt student team. The youth footballer was first used in the 1939/40 season in the cup at Eintracht in the senior division, and then from 1940/41 in the Gauliga. A special episode is described in the Eintracht book from the 1942/43 season, from the time of the Second World War with an acute shortage of players and the risk of relegation: “In the Tschammer Cup, the final at Gau level was reached - and again the opponent was Offenbacher Kickers. Again, Eintracht had major casting problems. The left runner Heilig started on August 8th as a goalkeeper in front of 6,000 spectators in the stadium, but played for the injured Feth center runner in the second half. But now the left defender Stubb guarded the gate. Nevertheless, the Eintracht gave the Kickers a great fight and was only conceivably defeated by 1: 2. "After a total of 355 league appearances with 53 goals, the versatile player who acted rather inconspicuously on the pitch, but who had the famous" two lungs ", finished seemed to have his long playing career after the 1956/57 season under coach Adolf Patek .

After the end of World War II, Heilig was part of the first Eintracht post-war team on August 26, 1945 in a 3: 3 against SG Union Niederrad alongside Hermann Lindemann and Erwin Schädler . He was named honorary captain as an active player of Eintracht in 1952 and won the championship in the Oberliga Süd with the Eagle Bearers in 1952/53 . Heilig had played all 30 league games and scored four goals under coach Kurt Windmann . In the final round of the German soccer championship , Heilig failed with teammates such as Helmut Henig (goalkeeper), Adolf Bechtold , Hans Wloka , Erich Dziwoki , Hubert Schieth , Alfred Pfaff and Erich Ebeling only at the eventual final winner 1. FC Kaiserslautern with the Walter brothers. Heilig had not missed any of the six group matches in the final round either.

In addition to playing in the Oberliga Süd, Heilig also experienced trips to Spain (Christmas 1950), a multi-week trip to the USA in May 1951 and a 14-day Christmas tour to Egypt in 1952 with Eintracht. With the game on April 14, 1957, a 1-0 away win against the Stuttgarter Kickers, the Eintracht honorary captain said goodbye to the Oberliga Süd.
