Werner "Kitti" Hellweg (* 1925 in Bielefeld , † 8. February 2008 ibid ) was a German football player .

Career

The defender Hellweg began his career in the youth of Arminia Bielefeld . In 1943, Arminia and its local rival VfB 03 joined the KSG Bielefeld war gaming group . Hellweg made his debut at this time in the team that played in the first-class Gauliga Westfalen and was bottom of the table. In the spring of 1944 Hellweg was posted to the Western Front as a soldier . After a bomb attack in December 1944, he was initially considered missing . After a two-week search, Hellweg was found. However, he had lost his left arm in the attack .

After the end of the war, Hellweg continued to play for Arminia Bielefeld despite his disability and was considered an unpleasant opponent. During a game at FC Schalke 04 , Hellweg guarded its playmaker Fritz Szepan with such vehemence that Szepan threatened to "kick Hellweg's ass " if Hellweg "didn't leave". Thanks to a special permit from the DFB , Hellweg was allowed to throw one-handed throw-ins for a year before this permit was revoked.

With the Arminia, Hellweg rose in 1949 to the first-class Oberliga West at the time. There, however, he did not play a game for the Bielefeld team. He later ended his career at Grün-Weiß Bielefeld . Hellweg later worked on a voluntary basis in Arminia's office until the 1990s . Hellweg died on February 8, 2008 at the age of 82.
