Werner Hofmann (born August 5, 1929 ) is a former German soccer player. In the GDR league he played in the 1950s for VfB and BSG unit Pankow and SC Rotation Leipzig .

Athletic career

In May 1950, Hofmann from Freiberg / Sa. coming to East Berlin VfB Pankow. The Pankower had previously played in the overall Berlin city league , but had been integrated into the GDR Oberliga for political reasons for the 1950/51 season. Hofmann was one of the numerous newcomers to VfB, who were supposed to replace the numerous regular players who had refused to move to the league. The newly formed team had no chance from the start and was clearly relegated at the end of the season. Hofmann was usually used as a right half-forward in 20 point games and scored five goals. In the summer of 1951, the company sports community (BSG) unit Pankow was founded, which consisted mainly of VfB players, including Werner Hofmann. The team was also incorporated into the GDR league for the 1951/52 season without sporting qualifications, but had just as little chance of staying up as the former VfB. Of the 36 league games, Hoffmann only played 17 games, played as a striker like at VfB, but only scored one goal. In contrast to the upper league, where the BSG unit was bottom of the table, it was able to assert itself more successfully in the GDR soccer cup. She only lost in the semifinals against Lokomotive Stendal , but still made it into the final because Stendal was disqualified for the involvement of an ineligible player. Against the SG Volkspolizei Dresden Pankow lost the cup final, in which Hofmann was called up as a right half-forward, with 0: 3.

After unit Pankow had made the 1952/53 season less successful in the second-rate GDR league and had only just barely escaped relegation, Hofmann moved to league competitor BSG Einheit Greifswald . Hofmann stayed in Greifswald for two seasons, after which he was brought to the newly founded soccer section of the SC DHfK Leipzig , which had been launched as the future squad forge of the GDR national team. It was incorporated into the GDR league with two teams (DHfK I and II), but they played there with little success and were dissolved again after the first half of the 1954/55 season.

The players were divided into different league teams, Hofmann came to SC Rotation Leipzig. There he was only used in the reserve team in the second half of the 1954/55 season. In the second half of 1955, an intermediate round was held in all GDR soccer leagues in order to then adjust the soccer game times to the calendar year. In the 13 games of the Oberliga intermediate round, Hofmann came in for SC Rotation as a replacement for the injured regular striker Wolfgang Seifert and scored two goals. In the league season 1956 Hofmann was not part of the first half of the season and was only used in a point game as a substitute. In the second half of the season he replaced the injured Roland Hempel and played twelve of the remaining 13 point games. Although only 27 years old, Hofmann was no longer part of the SC Rotation's league squad in 1957 and no longer appeared in any other higher-class team.
