Athletic career

At the age of 21, Werner Klemm played his only three league games as a newcomer to FC Karl-Marx-Stadt (FCK) in the 1968/69 season. He completed this as a defender or midfielder on the 17th, 24th and 25th matchdays. Although he had been officially registered for the FCK league team for the 1969/70 season, he was not used in the league. The Karl-Marx-Städter had to relegate to the GDR league after this season . Klemm was again nominated for the first team, but was again only called up in three point games. He only played one game from the start. In May 1971 he was called up for military service in the National People's Army for 18 months . During this time he was able to continue playing football in the GDR League with the Army Sports Association (ASG) Vorwärts Löbau . There he developed into a regular player and played all 20 ASG point games in the 1971/72 season. After his discharge from the army, he returned to FC Karl-Marx-Stadt, but was only used there in the 2nd team, which now played in the GDR league. There he came in 1972/73 in 11 and 1973/74 in 19 of 22 point games each. After the 2nd team was relegated from the GDR league in 1974, Klemm did not return to the higher league operations. Within six seasons he had completed three league games and 53 games in the GDR league. As a defensive player, he had not scored any goals.
