Werner Kunz (* 1940 ) is a German biologist . He studied at the University of Münster and received his doctorate there in 1966. After completing his studies, he worked from 1966 to 1969 as a research assistant at the University of Münster. From 1970 to 1971 he worked as a visiting researcher at Yale University . Kunz completed his habilitation in 1972 and in 1973 became Professor of Genetics at the University of Düsseldorf . He retired in 2005.

Life

Kunz worked as a schoolboy on the spread of birds in his home district in the Osnabrück district and published the book "Die Vogelwelt des Kreises Bersenbrück" on it in 1959 at a young age.

He then studied biology , chemistry and physics in Münster and concentrated on field biological work on the occurrence of birds and butterflies. With his doctorate from 1963 to 1966 he changed his field of interest and worked on chromosomes in insects . After a few years as a research assistant in Münster , he was a visiting scientist at Yale University in New Haven / USA in 1970 and 1971 . There he changed his field of work again and became a molecular biologist . After returning to Germany, he worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Genetics at the University of Düsseldorf from 1971 , completed his habilitation in 1972 in the subject of "General Biology" and in 1973 became Professor of Genetics there . Until 1982 his research area was ribosomal DNA in Drosophila melanogaster and some other insects. He then stopped working on Drosophila and founded a research group that used molecular genetic methods to deal with the parasite of the genus Schistosoma , the causative agent of schistosomiasis , a widespread tropical disease .

In 2004 Werner Kunz returned to his original focus of education, zoology, and began a cooperation with scientific theorists with whom he worked on the principles of grouping organisms into species. His book “Do species exist?” Was published in 2012 on the results of this research. - Principles of taxonomic classification “, which attempted to make the findings of the philosophers of science understandable for biologists. After this book, another book was published in 2016: "Species Conservation in Managed Habitats - The Myth of a Pristine Nature". This book contains the theoretical basics of nature and species protection.

Werner Kunz made long trips to almost all parts of the world, where he preferred to photograph birds and butterflies , which he publishes on the Internet.
