Werner Purgathofer
Werner Purgathofer (born October 27, 1955 in Vienna , Austria ) is an Austrian computer scientist and founder of the VRVis research center . He is a full-time professor at the Vienna University of Technology and works primarily in the areas of computer graphics and visualization .
Life
Werner Purgathofer is the first child of Ingrid and Alois Purgathofer and grew up in Vienna and the USA. After studying technical mathematics, he received his doctorate in 1984 from the Vienna University of Technology under Wilhelm Barth. Since 1988 he has been a university professor at the Vienna University of Technology , and from 1999 to 2019 head of the Institute for Computer Graphics and Algorithms (from 2018 Institute for Visual Computing and Human-Centered Technology). In 2000 he was the main operator for founding the VRVis competence center for virtual reality and visualization, of which he is the scientific director. In addition, he was active for decades in the European Society for Computer Graphics Eurographics , which he headed in 2013 and 2014.
Werner Purgathofer is married and has three children. His brother Peter Purgathofer (* 1963) is an associate professor at the same Institute for Visual Computing and Human-Centered Technology at the Vienna University of Technology.
