Werner Röcke (born April 25, 1944 in Sopot / Danzig ) is a German literary scholar and Medievalist .

Werner Röcke studied German and Protestant theology in Göttingen and Berlin from 1963 to 1969. In 1975 he received his doctorate. From 1975/76 to 1984 he held teaching positions at the University of Essen , the Free University of Berlin and the University of Hanover . From 1984/85 to 1986 he was a substitute professor at the University of Bayreuth and lecturer at the University of Hamburg . In 1985 he completed his habilitation at the Free University of Berlin. In 1986 he became Professor of Older German Philology at the University of Bayreuth. In 1991/92 he was Vice President of the University of Bayreuth. From 1993 to 2011, Röcke taught as a professor for older German literature at the Humboldt University in Berlin .

His research focuses on the cultures of laughter in the Middle Ages and in the early modern period, the history of the novel, the hermeneutics of the foreign, the staging of violence and the avoidance of violence in literature and culture of the Middle Ages, the history of mentality and historical anthropology .

Röcke is the editor of various book series and co-editor of the magazines Mittellateinisches Jahrbuch and Brüder Grimm Gedenken .
