Werner Röhrig (born August 3, 1934 in Leverkusen ; † December 13, 2010 there ) was a German football player . He was the captain of Bayer 04 Leverkusen for many years , including the senior league promotion team from 1962 (at that time the top German division). When he was in his late 20s, he decided to end his active career for professional reasons. Later he was a member of the board of directors of the football department and a member of the board of elders at Bayer 04. He also looked after the footballers' historical archive until his death.

Act

Röhrig was what was called a classic street footballer. It was only at the age of 17 that he was discovered in a school team by youth coaches from the Bayer 04 sports association. He immediately became Middle Rhine Champion with the A-Juniors in 1952 and switched to the amateur team, which was trained by Theo Kirchberg . Here he played with the later master coach Udo Lattek and recommended himself for the first team that was relegated from the first-class league in 1956.

In 1962 he led the Werkself as captain back into the first-class Oberliga West . Despite a successful 1962/63 season , the Leverkusen team had to return to the second division after just one year. The reason was the introduction of the Bundesliga. A controversial selection process made it impossible for Bayer 04 to qualify, even if the Werkself only lost one of the ten games against the West German Bundesliga founding members during the season and recorded two home wins against the eventual champions from Dortmund and runners-up Cologne: " Although we had a great team with later Bundesliga greats and national players like Manfred Manglitz , Werner Biskup , Uwe Klimaschefski , Werner Görts and Hans-Otto Peters, "Werner Röhrig recalled.

At his own request, Röhrig did not remain active in the Regionalliga West much longer in order to fully devote himself to his job at Agfa . Nevertheless, he remained closely associated with the football department as a player and later organizer of the traditional team founded by Fredy Mutz , member of the football department board, the council of elders and the historical commission of TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen . Röhrig attended every Werkself home game as far as he could until his death.

Werner Röhrig was the older brother of Helmut Röhrig, who was part of the regional league team from the 1963/64 season. Both were not on the pitch together this season because Helmut has not yet played a competitive game.
