Werner Rühm (* 1961 ) is a German radiation protectionist and professor at the Medical Faculty of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

Career

Werner Rühm studied physics at the Technical University of Munich and did his doctorate in applied nuclear physics . He then began working at the Federal Office for Radiation Protection in Neuherberg near Munich , where he dealt with incorporation measurements of radioactive substances and radioecology . Later he moved to the Radiobiology Institute of the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, where he worked to determine the neutron dose of atomic bomb survivors . Werner Rühm has been working at the GSF Research Center and the Helmholtz Center Munich since 2005 , where he heads the Individual Dosimetry Working Group , today's Medical and Environmental Dosimetry Working Group, at the Institute for Radiation Protection. Since 2016 he has also been acting director of the Institute for Radiation Protection, succeeding Peter Jacob .

In 2008 Werner Rühm was appointed adjunct professor at the Medical Faculty of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. For his work on improving the dosimetry of atomic bomb survivors, he was awarded the Japanese Government Research Award in 1997 (about "Research Prize of the Japanese Government").

Committee work

Since 2005, Werner Rühm member of the committee 1 Radiation Effects ( " radiation effect ") of the International Commission on Radiological Protection ICRP, which he chairs took 2016th Rühm has also been a member of the German Radiation Protection Commission and its Radiation Risk Committee since 2003; since January 2020 he has been chairman of the radiation protection commission. In 2018 Werner Rühm became the deputy chairman of the SC 1-26 Approaches for Integrating Radiation Biology and Epidemiology for Enhancing Low Dose Risk Assessment committee (such as "Approaches to the integration of radiation biology and epidemiology to improve the risk assessment of small radiation doses") of the US radiation protection commission NCRP called.

Werner Rühm has been a member of the advisory board of the European radiation dosimetry association EURADOS since 2010 and is now President as successor to Helmut Schuhmacher .

Werner Rühm has been co-editor of the journal Radiation and Environmental Biophysics since 2005 , today alongside Anna Friedl and Andrzej Wojcik .
