Werner Roth (born April 4, 1948 in Yugoslavia ) is a former American football player who played in defense .
career
Roth came to the United States with his family from the Banat area when he was eight and started playing soccer in high school in the 1960s. Between 1972 and 1979 he played for Cosmos New York in the North American Soccer League together with Franz Beckenbauer and Pelé, among others . In 1972, 1977 and 1978 he was able to celebrate winning the championship with his fellow players. He made 125 professional appearances for Cosmos (4 goals) and ended his career after a knee injury.
Roth played 15 games for the US national team .

In the film Escape or Victory by director John Huston in 1981 he played the captain "Baumann" of the German Wehrmacht selection at the side of Sylvester Stallone .
In 2006 he married actress Robin Mattson .
In 2013 he received a great honor when he was allowed to lead the German-American Steuben Parade as a Grand Marshal.
