Werner Schmid

Werner Schmid (born February 13, 1930 , † January 3, 2002 ) was a Swiss doctor and geneticist . He was a pioneer in human cytogenetics and a co-founder of the journal Cytogenetic and Genome Research .

Life

Werner Schmid grew up in Winterthur . He studied medicine in Zurich and Paris . After stays abroad in Austin and Houston , he was called back to Zurich in 1962 to set up a cytogenetic laboratory at the children's hospital there. In 1970 and 1971 he was President of the Swiss Society for Genetics and from 1978 to 1979 of the Swiss Society of Medical Genetics (SSMG - Swiss Society for Medical Genetics). 1995 Werner Schmid retired.

The cat's eye syndrome is also known as Schmid-Fraccaro syndrome , because he was significantly involved in the first description of the extra chromosome typical of this disease in 1965 .
