Werner Schnelle (born 1942 in Vienna , Austria ) is an Austrian photographer .

life and work

Werner Schnelle was born in Vienna in 1942 ; he has lived and worked in Salzburg since 1965 . Working as a freelance photographer since 1987, he primarily works artistically with special photographic techniques such as instant cameras , photo , chemi and luminograms, with 'optical work', camera-free and negatives-free photography and in-camera negatives. Fast work is mainly created in the studio and deals with the process of photography itself in a media-reflexive manner, and "unique photographic items" are often the result of his artistic work.

The central elements in the work of Werner Schnelle, who with her "abstraction occupies a singular position within Austria" , are always the medium photography itself, the properties of light and space and of movement and time and the traces, the objects under the Influence of the photo-immanent processes in the picture. In the medium Werner Schnelle finds questions about the intrinsic qualities and characteristics in photographic and photoid processes. The image-generating light is what is essential, unchangeable, which leaves traces and signs in the room. Anything other than light, which is a constant quantity and weaves space and time back into a whole, depends on the viewer. Even in the earliest publication, the "historicity of looks", as he calls this interplay with the viewer, is the central theme of Werner Schnelle's instant photography: "The viewer of instant images and his predispositions thus come to the fore, Image and viewing are aesthetically linked in a dialectical game. "

Werner Schnell's approach to photography is deliberately analogue, thereby binding it to the origins of the medium and pointing to an appropriation of the world that only exists in analogue photography. Analog photography delivers an "authenticity" - for example through the in-camera negatives not being changeable after the recording process - but also a "lasting tension" through coincidences and experiments that make the chemical processes possible.

Kurt Kaindl locates the interests of Werner Schnelle's photography in the "exploration of the technical, chemical and optical foundations of photography [and in the] fundamental interest in images and their aesthetic and poetic qualities that only find a valid representation in the viewer" .

Margit Zuckriegl, who has curated several exhibitions with Schnelles Arbeit and wrote texts for his publications, says about Werner Schnelle's photography: " Werner Schnelle's photographs always reflect the conceptual approach of his work. [...] Schnell's photographic oeuvre draws is characterized by an experimental character and a specific handwriting. Light, space and time are the constants in an intensive creative process that alternates between trial and calculation. "

80 works from the "Photo Concepts" series by Werner Schnelle are in the collection of the Museum der Moderne Salzburg .
