Kurt Kaindl (* 1954 in Gmunden ) is an Austrian photographer, editor and curator . He lives and works in Salzburg .

life and career

Kurt Kaindl studied German and communication science at the University of Salzburg and received his doctorate in 1983. phil., on the side he completed a photography training at Salzburg College. In 1981 he was a founding member of the Salzburg Galerie Fotohof . Since 1990 he has been the editor of Edition Fotohof at Otto Müller Verlag , a series of illustrated books on artistic photography, with books by Inge Morath , Stefan Kruckenhauser , Karl-Markus Gauß and Reinhart Mlineritsch .

As part of the book projects The Unknown Europeans and The Edge of the Middle , Kaindl and the Austrian writer Karl-Markus Gauß visited little-known, mostly existentially threatened European ethnic groups: the Aromanians , Arbëresh , Sephardi , Sorbs , Gottscheers , Assyrians , Memel Germans , Tatars in Lithuania, Zipser , Zimbern , Degesi and the Black Sea Germans in Ukraine . The pictures from these projects have been exhibited in Dresden , Salzburg, Washington, DC , Vienna, Budapest , Bucharest and Hong Kong , among others .

With the long-term project “Travels in No Man's Land”, started in 2008, Kaindl documents the development of the inner-European border regions of the former Iron Curtain , photographs “ the landscape created by the extensive no man's land, the remaining but also destroyed settlements and, above all, the people who are still or now only live at this limit again. “The black and white photographs with detailed captions were exhibited in Attersee am Attersee (2014), Vienna (2009) and in the Landesmuseum Linz (2014).
