The Wernicke River is a 15 km long left tributary of the Copper River in Alaska . The river was named in 1910 by Lawrence Martin of the US Geological Survey (USGS) after L. Wernicke, an engineer who helped build the Copper River and Northwestern Railway .
The Wernicke River is fed by the Wernicke Glacier in the Chugach Mountains at an altitude of about 250 m . It flows initially to the northwest, later to the southwest. The mouth of the Wernicke River is at a height of 56 m . The lower end of the Allen Glacier is on the opposite side of the valley .
