history

Wernli in Trimbach

Friedrich Johann Wernli-Studer laid the foundation stone for the company in 1905 when he and his two sons opened a confectionery bakery in Trimbach. Due to a lack of demand, however, the company had to close again. A few years later, his father's pastry shop was re-established by the 17-year-old son, who brought his savings into the company. In 1914 the two brothers Fritz and Paul Wernli took over the management of the company and founded the "Wernli Brothers Biscuit Factory".

In 1926 the confectionery was expanded to become the first fully automated biscuit factory in Switzerland, which gave the company a production advantage. In order to pack the produced quantities quickly, a packing line was developed for Wernli in cooperation with SIG in Neuhausen , which was later sold under the name GRA. New biscuit creations were created, including the “Jura-Waffel”, “Knuspergold” or “Petit Beurre”,

Wernli has been using TV spots as advertising media since 1965. The slogan "Me hett de Wernli eifach gernli" is one of the classics of Swiss advertising. In 1982 Wernli became the Swiss market leader in the fine baked goods segment. In 1992 a new factory was put into operation, which was the most modern biscuit factory in Europe. Shortly afterwards, Wernli took over the Oulevay company from Morges , whose top products (e.g. Chocoly and Florentin) were integrated into the existing range.

In 2003, Wernli received the Solothurn Entrepreneur Award from the Canton of Solothurn in recognition of his business achievements .

In 2008, Wernli was completely taken over by the Lucerne biscuit manufacturer HUG. The production site in Trimbach was retained. Wernli AG will continue to exist as an independent subsidiary in Trimbach.

The two companies jointly employ 400 people and in 2008 generated sales of 145 million Swiss francs.

Products

Wernli specializes in fine baked goods, which often have a high chocolate content. The individual products are positioned as Swiss quality products, over 35 percent of which are exported. The main competitor is Kambly , who focuses on the premium market.
