Werthein (family)
Werthein is the name of a family of entrepreneurs in Argentina .
The first parents of the Werthein family, Leon and Anne Werthein born Ama Jajam, immigrated from Bessarabia in tsarist Russia to Argentina in 1904 and 1905 under anti-Jewish persecution and settled in the village of Miguel Riglos in the province of La Pampa . In 1905 they opened a small business selling animals, fruits, seeds and fuels there. Leon and Anne Werthein had eight children, including Gregorio, Numo, Noel and Julio Werthein.

Agriculture
The brothers Gregorio, Numo and Noel (1911–2002) Werthein expanded their parents' farm continuously from around 1930 onwards. The Gregorio, Numo y Noel Werthein SA was founded in 1969 and includes an agricultural area and a fruit area. The agricultural area has over 100,000 hectares of land and over 45,000 cattle. It produces wheat, corn, sunflower, soybeans, cotton, popcorn, confectionery, sunflower oil, black beans, red beans and beef. The fruit division produces apples, pears, peaches, apricots, plums and strawberries in dried form and as fruit juice concentrate. The company's headquarters are in Cipolletti . Almost all production is exported to the USA and Europe or supplied to the manufacturers Kellogg's and Quaker Oats. In May 2008 there were prolonged strikes by workers for better working conditions.
Her brother Julio Werthein (born April 7, 1918) was already involved in the banking sector in the 1940s.
Banco Mercantil Argentino
In 1965 Julio Werthein and his brothers took a share in the Banco Mercantil Argentino . The bank was founded on September 18, 1928 as Banco Israelita Argentino SA and renamed Banco Mercantil Argentino SA on October 4, 1940.

In 1999 the Banco Mercantil Argentino was merged with the Banco Caja de Ahorro (Sparkasse). In 2000, Banco Sudameris Argentina took over Banco Caja de Ahorro . After a few subsequent mergers and organizational reforms, Banco Mercantil has now merged into the new Banco Patagonia , in which the Werthein family no longer holds any shares.
In 1995, however, she founded the Fundacion Banco Mercantil Argentino , a foundation that promotes music, literature and the arts.

Numerous holdings of the Werthein clan are held by the holding company Los W SA . Gerardo Werthein's successor is now Dario Werthein .

The BSI Werthein Merchant House AG was founded on October 11, 2004 in Lugano / Switzerland. The president is Gerardo Werthein.
Caja de Ahorro y Seguro - Insurance
The Caja de Ahorro y Seguro and its subsidiaries is one of the largest insurance groups in Argentina. The holding company Los W SA holds a 43.5 percent share in the insurance group. The president is Adrian Werthein (born January 18, 1952). Los W SA also holds 20 percent of Standard Bank .
Europ Assistance Argentina
The Werthein family is said to have a 34 percent stake in Europ Assistance Argentina, which has been active in Argentina since 1997.
Oil production
The family is said to also own an area of around 100 hectares in the province of La Pampa , in which the semi-state ENARSA (Energia Argentina SA) wants to produce oil.
Telecom Argentina
In late summer 2005, 48.00 percent of Sofora Telecomunicaciones SA was taken over for 125 million euros by France Telecom , which in turn holds 67.78 percent of Nortel Inversora SA, which holds 54.74 percent of Telecom Argentina .
