The Weser Bridge Minden is a city bridge over the Weser and, as part of today's Landstrasse  534, connects the city center of the East Westphalian city of Minden on the left bank of the Weser with the districts on the right bank of the Weser. Medieval trade routes already crossed at this ford across the Weser.

location

Today's Landstrasse 534 runs over the Weser Bridge Minden, which connects the Minden city center from the Bundesstrasse 61 with the right bank of the Weser and at the same time enables city access from the east over the Weser River. At the same time, the bridge is the direct access to the long-distance train station of the city of Minden, which is located on the right bank of the Weser, and continues eastwards via Victoriastrasse and the Grille to the state border with Lower Saxony ; so continue in the direction of Bückeburg and Hanover . It follows the old road that connected the city of Minden over the Weserfurt to the east. For a long time, this bridge was the last fixed crossing on the Weser to Bremen, about 200 km away.

description

The tied arch bridge was rebuilt in 1978 as part of the reorganization of road traffic in the city of Minden and replaced the previous building, a crescent - shaped truss arch bridge with a suspended lane. At the same time, the new carriageway was expanded from two to six lanes without reinstalling the tram tracks that were no longer needed. On the new, current bridge, the bridge arches and the bridge panel are made of steel and were prefabricated north of the old bridge on the eastern bank. Then it was pushed over the Weser next to the old bridge. Here it was temporarily put into operation and moved across to the south after the old bridge was demolished. The receiving bridges to the west and east were extended on the old pillars , with the pillars being given a porch to widen the contact area. On the eastern bank there were four openings on the western bank. The steel arches are not connected and are blue in color. Under the bridge in the flood area of the Weser, the ground is paved and is used on the west bank as a parking area for Mindener Schlagde , on the east bank it is a makeshift parking lot. New usage measures are being considered here as part of the master plan of the city of Minden.

history

The stone bridge over the Weser in Minden in the 17th century, copper engraving by Merian
The road over today's Weser Bridge from the west bank

The first bridge over the Weser was first mentioned in a document dated June 12, 1258. There was already a ford here at the widening of the Weser river after the narrow Weser breakthrough Porta Westfalica . The first bridges built here were made of wood, later the first arched bridges were made of stone. Since the city of Minden was a fortress , access to the city on the western bank of the bridge was protected by the so-called Wesertor .

The wooden Weser bridge in Minden, already mentioned in the 13th century, was replaced by a stone bridge in 1594–1597. This stone bridge was blown up by French troops in 1813 when Napoleon is said to have crossed the Weser at this point on his retreat. Later it was poorly repaired and replaced by a steel bridge with two trussed arches in 1871–1874. On May 11, 1915, a new bridge over the Weser was erected without piers, which soon after received rails and handled the dense electric tram traffic to the station from the end of 1920. In order to build this new bridge, the old two-arch bridge with river piers in the middle was moved to the north and the new Weser bridge was built at the old location. The bridge was blown up in 1945 by German troops. The British pioneers then built a guarded wooden emergency bridge with two-way lanes in the south. It was called "Francis Bridge". The actual Weser bridge was repaired again in the following years until 1947. The tram ran over this bridge until 1957.

In 2017, the bridge has to be renovated after the damage to the roadway has been determined: Renewal of the road surface, cap on the north side removed from rust and the northern bridge arch removed from the moss, rusted and repainted. Then it's the turn of the southern part. The work will last until November 2017 and cost 2.1 million euros including planning services. The bridge was opened again on June 21, 2018.
