history

Westbad 1972

The Westbad as built in 1972

Due to the imminent closure of the Danube pool on the Schillerwiese due to the planned construction of the Main-Danube Canal, there was a lack of suitable open-air swimming area for the booming city. In addition, there was no indoor sports pool suitable for competitions in Regensburg. With the planning of a multifunctional pool, an attempt was made to counteract the lack of open space in an indoor pool and at the same time the low occupancy of an outdoor pool. After examining the technical details and tracing the future operating costs, the City Council decided on a planning idea that the Paris Piscine Georges Hermant followed that there by Roger Taillibert was built and still in this form at the Rue David d'Angers is received . The groundbreaking ceremony for the 24 million mark project with an innovative tent roof was in September 1970. The bathroom was declared a research pool. Therefore, the substantial amount could be mitigated by high grants.

The overall concept initially included the excavator pond as a usable natural lake for bathers. It therefore comprised 90,000 m 2 of play and lounging area and 17,000 m 2 of water. The remaining parts of the building were built in a short time from a prefabricated system made of reinforced concrete in a shed construction with columns and bars with attached roof panels. The opening by Rudolf Schlichtinger was after the keys were handed over by the architect Peter Mehr on June 3, 1972.

When the weather was fine, the tent roof made of translucent, white polyester could either be opened using an automatic control system or with control impulses by hand via the driving cables using cable tractors. These snapped into place at the respective end point, on the ground or on the inclined 37 m high mast on motorized bindings. The indoor pool area was transformed into a further sub-area of the outdoor pool.

The roof system proved to be operationally not reliable, was often required for repairs and therefore remained permanently closed after a few years. In addition, the thin tent roof skin posed a problem in terms of energy technology.

Westbad today

In 1984 a three-year renovation began, in which a new, massive roof construction was used. A general renovation was planned by the Frankfurt architects Fischer, Glaser and Kretschmer. The reopening was in 1987. In October 2006 the newly built sauna area opened. In 2013, extensive renovation work was carried out on the Westbad due to damage to the acoustic ceiling. The Westbad has around 600,000 bathers per year.
