The Western Road is one of the main shopping streets in the city of Wernigerode in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt . It runs in a west-east direction from the intersection with Ilsenburger Straße, over the bridge of the flood race, through the western gate to the town's market square.

history

The name Westernstrasse is first documented in the 14th century. The street led from the west through the still existing tower-crowned western gate into the old town of Wernigerode to the market square, on which the town hall is located. The extension of Westernstrasse in an easterly direction to Rimbecker Tor, which was demolished in 1843, forms the Breite Strasse .

Until the renumbering, the houses in Westernstrasse 1 to 35 had the town list numbers 15 to 47.

In the entire western course of the Westernstrasse, after the confluence of the Ringstrasse, the Westernstrasse is used as a shopping mile up to the market square and is closed to public traffic during the day. In addition to Breiten , Burgstrasse and Marktstrasse , Westernstrasse is one of the main shopping streets in Wernigerode.

Numerous listed half-timbered houses have been preserved on the north and south sides of Westernstrasse. According to the list of cultural monuments in Wernigerode, these include :
