The market street is one of the main shopping streets in the city of Wernigerode in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt . It runs in a south-north direction from Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Straße, the location of the Dullenturm, which was removed from the city wall in the 1960s, to the town's market square.

history

The name Marktstraße comes from the time of the Kingdom of Westphalia at the beginning of the 19th century. The street led from the market square past several knight's courts to the city wall and was therefore initially called Ritterstrasse. In contrast to Western and Breite StrasseOriginally, Marktstrasse was not a thoroughfare, but a dead end street, the course of which ended at the Dullenturm at the city wall, where at the same time Kochstrasse also joined the town's smallest house. It was only after the city wall in the area of the Dullenturm was torn down in the 19th century that Marktstrasse could be used continuously. The southwest section of Marktstrasse, south of the later demolished Zeisberg house, was not built on until the beginning of the 20th century.

The houses Marktstrasse 1 to Marktstrasse 51 used to have different three-digit place list numbers between 600 and 700.

The northern end of Marktstrasse is designated as a pedestrian zone and closed to public traffic during the day. The southern part of Marktstrasse is open to motor vehicle traffic as a one-way street.

There are several listed buildings on the west and east sides of Marktstrasse. According to the list of cultural monuments in Wernigerode, these include :
