The house at Marktstraße 27 is a listed building in the old town of Wernigerode , Harz district , in Saxony-Anhalt . It is a building that was previously used as a residential building.

location

Marktstrasse 27 is located in the southern part of Wernigerode's city center, approx. 150 meters from the market square on the east side of Marktstrasse .

Architecture and history

It is a three - story half - timbered house with an attic from the 17th century. The year of construction is named 1656. Among the oldest known residents of the house were representatives of the Soest family in the early years.

On the first and second floors of the house, three St. Andrew's crosses are installed under each of the three windows in the framework.

Today the roof has a direct connection to the neighboring, also from the 17th century building Marktstrasse 29 .

The height of the building's ground floor has been kept remarkably low. As a result, the entrance to the house is not even 1.80 m high. This led to the popular expression Villa Duckdich for this and the neighboring building.

The building used to have the location list number 638. At that time it was a residential building with a transverse courtyard and stable. The residents in the years 1895/1896 were the shoemaker August Fischer and his wife and in 1905 the gardener August Fischer. Simple workers and day laborers also lived in this house in earlier centuries .

The house is listed in the local monument register under registration number 094 02496.

In 2015 the two houses Marktstrasse 27 and Marktstrasse 29 were acquired by a family from Bavaria and completely renovated between 2016 and 2018. In doing so, the buildings were completely gutted and rebuilt in accordance with the listed buildings. The spatial conditions presented a particular challenge: the house at Marktstrasse 27 is only 3 meters wide on the street front. This decreases further towards the rear and is only 2 meters there. After the renovation, the houses will each have two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen with dining area and two bathrooms. The two houses have been used as holiday homes since 2019.
