Burgstrasse (Wernigerode)
The Castle Road is one of the main shopping streets in the city of Wernigerode in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt . It runs in a south-north direction to the confluence with Breite Straße .
history
The name Burgstrasse is first documented in the 14th century. The street got its name because it led from the town center to today's Wernigerode Castle , the former castle of the Counts of Wernigerode on the Agnesberg. The uphill stretch of road that connects to the end of Burgstrasse is called Burgberg .
Coming from the south, Burgstrasse led from the municipality of Nöschenrode , which was independent until 1929 , through the castle gate, which was demolished in the 19th century, into the old town of Wernigerode. There it joins at a right angle into Breite Straße, which runs from east to west .
In the city fire of 1751, numerous buildings on Burgstrasse were destroyed. The road was then somewhat widened and widened in some places along its course. For reasons of fire protection, in some places on Burgstrasse no half-timbered houses were rebuilt, but stone buildings that were intended to inhibit or completely prevent the flames from spreading. These buildings, made entirely of stone, include the houses at Burgstrasse 22 (Hirsch Pharmacy) and Burgstrasse 37 (Robert Koch Institute). Furthermore, fire walls and gables were built between many half-timbered houses.
During the bombing raid on Wernigerode in February 1944, several historic half-timbered houses were found on Burgstrasse, including several houses in the area where Burgstrasse meets Breite Strasse, including the Thüringer Hof and the Capitol theater .
In the northern area of Burgstrasse behind the Liebfrauenkirchhof, Burgstrasse is used as a shopping mile and is closed to public traffic during the day. Several side streets flow into Burgstrasse. The Liebfrauenkirchhof, with the Liebfrauenkirche and its high tower, is particularly striking .
In addition to Breiten , Western and Marktstrasse , Burgstrasse is one of the main shopping streets in Wernigerode.
Numerous listed half-timbered houses have been preserved on the west and east sides of Burgstrasse to this day. According to the list of cultural monuments in Wernigerode, these include :
