Westminster is the historic core of London Borough of City of Westminster , where in the Palace of Westminster , the Parliament of the United Kingdom is. Westminster was founded in the 7th century around a monastery that was built at the time.
Westminster is often used to refer to the Parliament and the political center of government of the United Kingdom, as the Palace of Westminster and all major government bodies continue to be located there. The term Westminster is also a name for the Westminster system . This is understood to be the parliamentary model of a democratic government. It originated in the UK, but is used in a similar way in many other countries. It is increasingly widespread in the Commonwealth of Nations and in other parts of the former British Empire .
history
The name originally referred to the area around Westminster Abbey , which has been the seat of the government of England for a thousand years. Furthermore, it also includes the City of Westminster, which is larger in area and to which the former suburbs of St. Marylebone and Paddington have also belonged since 1965 . Thorney Island forms the historic part of the borough on which Westminster Abbey was built, which is still the traditional coronation site of the British monarchy . The nearby Palace of Westminster became the headquarters of the English kings after it was conquered by the Normans in 1066. It later became the seat of Parliament and the Royal Courts of Justice . These are now at the far end of Westminster and border the City of London .
Although the monarchy was represented within the City of London by the Tower of London , the king did not reside in this part of the city that was completely unacceptable to him and where many people lived in disastrous living conditions and in poverty. In the course of time two centers emerged in London, an economic one in the City of London and a political and cultural one in Westminster. This classification has been preserved to this day. In later years, the British monarchy relocated to other parts of the city. Parliament sits in the Palace of Westminster and most of the ministries are in Whitehall .
Today Westminster also includes large residential areas, the residents of which are predominantly of the classic London working class and live in public housing.

Westminster School , one of the most important private schools in England, is located near the Palace of Westminster and Westminster Abbey . Three of the four campuses of the University of Westminster are within the City of Westminster, although not in the historic part of the city.
