Westentotenhof

The Westpark was established in 1811 as Westentotenhof ( cemetery outside the city walls). In 1912, after the main cemetery was established, it was closed as a cemetery and converted into a park. Some of the old gravestones are still there today and show the weathered names of many well-known Dortmund families.

park

In summer the Westpark is often used for barbecues and extensive parties and is a meeting place for students, musicians and media people. It is located near the Kreuzviertel , the Unionviertel and the Althoff block and mainly attracts a young, alternative audience.

At the northern park entrance is the original front of the railway station of Cologne-Minden railway preferred war memorial . The memorial goes back to designs by Karl Friedrich Schinkel for the tomb of Gerhard von Scharnhorst . It commemorates the Dortmund soldiers who died in the battle of Königgrätz in 1866 . The floor plan shows the shape of a sarcophagus . The pedestal carries a sleeping lion as a symbol for the sleeping power of the fatherland. On the broadside are the names of the fallen. In the park there is another memorial for six victims of the French occupation of the Ruhr . On the main path parallel to Möllerstrasse is the grave of the miner captain and director of the Oberbergamt in Dortmund, Alexander von Mielecki, who died in 1853 and came from the Bomst district in the Prussian province of Posen .

The West Park with its trees, the Sleeping Lion war memorial, the Fallen Memorial from 1931 and 16 grave monuments are registered as monuments in the monuments list of the city of Dortmund . The design for the war memorial was made by the sculptor Melchior Anton Zurstraßen in 1869.

Under parts of the Westpark are the tunnels to Dortmund's largest air raid shelter , which was built in the final phase of the Second World War .
