Weather change (mining)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In mining, weather change is the exchange of stale air for fresh weather in the mine workings . But the miner also describes the seasonal change in weather direction as a change of weather.

Air exchange

The mine workings have to be constantly supplied with fresh weather. For this purpose, bad weather , but also bad weather , must be removed from the mine workings and replaced by fresh weather. The renewal of the weather in the mine workings is brought about by the weather train . This weather train is either created naturally or it is produced by the various weather machines. A regular change in weather is necessary so that there is enough breathable air for the miners working there at all times underground in all workplaces in operation.

Change of weather direction

Seasonal weather change

With natural ventilation by means of day openings at different heights , there is a seasonal reversal of the weather direction. This is particularly noticeable with a combination of a tunnel in connection with a shaft . If the tunnel mouth hole is set lower than the hanging bench , the weather direction is different in summer than in winter. In summer the air flows through the tunnel into the mine and out of the shaft, in winter it flows in through the shaft and out of the tunnel mouth hole again. This is due to the temperature differences that exist between the pit temperature and the outside temperature at different times of the year. Temperatures of eight to ten degrees Celsius prevail throughout the year in the mine. In winter, when the outside temperature is low, this means that the warm air from the mine workings rises up through the shaft. This creates a negative pressure in the tunnel. The colder outside air flows through the tunnel mouth hole, is heated again and the process continues uninterrupted if nothing changes in the outside temperature. When the outside temperature rises in spring, the temperature in the mine building is lower than the outside temperature. Due to their relatively low temperature, the weather now has a greater weight than the outside air. As a result, the heavier weather now flows out of the tunnel mouth hole.

If the air temperature changes, this can lead to a decrease in the flow of weather and a temporary standstill. Depending on the weather, this standstill can last for days to weeks. It is also possible that the weather will change due to a change in the air temperature. This change in weather, in which the direction of the weather is different than normal, is what the miner calls the wrong weather change.
