Whetstone rocks

The Wetzsteinfelsen in the Fichtelgebirge is a rock formation consisting of Frauenbach quartzites with a small dump in the Hohe Heide , north of the climatic health resort of Bischofsgrün in the Bayreuth district . Altitude: 798  m above sea level NN .

geology

The formation of the whetstone rock begins 495 - 486 million years ago. At that time, clays and sands were deposited layer by layer and hundreds of meters thick off the north coast of the primary continent Gondwana . When the continents of Gondwana and Laurussia collide , the clays become phyllites and sands become quartzites. They then exposed them for millions of years.

Whetstones

The rocks of the whetstone rock are very hard and consist almost exclusively of microscopic quartz grains. They were ideal for making whetstones . These were used for grinding and sharpening tools, especially knives, scythes and sickles. Whetstones must have been dismantled here very early. Local history researcher Michael Götz brings a copy of the land book of Berneck, Gefrees and Goldkronach from the year 1536 to the archive for the history of Upper Franconia. The name "Wezstein" appears in the description of the forests and woods. This means that stone material was already being used to make whetstones at this time.

Lookout rock

From the 798 meter high whetstone rock you have a good view of the Ochsenkopf, the second highest mountain in the Fichtelgebirge. The local association Bischofsgrün of the Fichtelgebirgsverein built a viewing pavilion in 1968 and 2013, information boards provide information about geology, fauna, flora and the former Markgrafenweg.
