Weyerbuschturm

The Weyerbuschturm is a lookout tower in the Nützenbergpark on the summit of the Nützenberg on the northern bank of the Wupper in the Elberfeld-West district of Wuppertal .

history

The creation of the observation tower goes back to a private initiative. The Elberfeld button manufacturer and city councilor Emil Weyerbusch (1846–1909) established a foundation in 1897 to build the tower from Grauwacke . It was inaugurated on November 1, 1898 after a short construction period. He stands at an altitude of 259 m above sea level. NN and is 25 m high. 119 steps lead to the tower room and a further 18 steps to the viewing platform, which is 17 meters high.

The two originally open balconies were bricked up in 1945 by the British occupation forces and used as a radio booth. These so-called tower rooms were not dismantled after the war and now appear as slated oriels.

The city of Wuppertal had the tower completely renovated in 1981/82. Until 2008 it houses an amateur radio association that maintains a radio station there. Once a year for a children's party and individually after registering by telephone, the tower was opened to visitors for viewing.

Current development

After parts of the roof fell from the tower in 2008, it was scaffolded. In February 2011 it became known that the city of Wuppertal had completely stopped the upcoming renovation, for which only 55,000 euros had been estimated. The cost of a renovation has now risen to around 100,000 euros, which is too much for the city.

The scaffolding will be dismantled at the end of April 2011 without a final repair of the tower being completed. The renovation was limited to an "emergency measure". Among other things, the tower hood was sealed for around 8,000 euros.
