The distribution area of the Weyland mouse nasal bucket

The Weyland mouse-nosed bucket ( Microperoryctes murina ) is a species of marsupial that occurs in the Weyland Range in western Papua Province in New Guinea.

features

The Weyland mouse nasal bag reaches a head body length of 15 to 17.4 cm and has a 10.5 to 11 cm long tail. This makes the species one of the smallest nasal sacs. The weight of the animals is estimated at 100 g. The fur is dark smoky gray and without the dark median stripe on the back, which is actually typical of the genus. The tail is monochrome, dark in color and has no pale tip like all other species of the genus. The Scotrum is hairy and gray-white.

Habitat and way of life

The animals live in the Weyland Range in the west of the Papua Province in New Guinea. The only three previously known specimens were caught at an altitude of around 2500 meters. So far, nothing is known about behavior, nutrition and reproduction. As with the Arfak mouse nosebag ( Microperoryctes aplini ), the morphology of the feet and the very soft fur are reminiscent of the conditions in small mammals of the same size, some of which live underground. It is possible that the Weyland mouse-nosed poult lives, like a shrew, partially burrowing underground and also looks for its food consisting mainly of invertebrates there.

Danger

The IUCN does not have enough data to indicate a degree of risk for the Weyland mouse nasal sac. Since it is only known from an area that has not been investigated by scientists since 1931, and other areas with possible occurrences of the species have not been explored, no information can be given on the status of the animals.
