The distribution area of the Arfak mouse-nosed pouch

The Arfak mouse-nosed bucket ( Microperoryctes aplini ) is a species of marsupial that occurs in the Arfak Mountains in the east of the Vogelkop Peninsula.

features

The Arfak mouse nose bag reaches a head body length of 14 to 16 cm and has a 11.5 to 12 cm long tail. This makes the species the smallest nasal purse. The weight of the animals is unknown. The fur is light brown on the back with a noticeable dark central stripe, the belly is gray-brown with a creamy white central stripe. The tail is relatively long and colored brown above and creamy white below. The last sixth of the tail is white.

Habitat and way of life

The animals live in forests in the Arfak Mountains in the east of the Vogelkop Peninsula. The only four known specimens were caught at two sites at altitudes of 1,800 and 2,200 meters. The entire distribution area is less than 3000 km². So far, nothing is known about behavior, nutrition and reproduction. As in the Weyland mouse-nosed pouch ( Microperoryctes murina ), the morphology of the feet and the very soft fur are reminiscent of the conditions in small mammals of the same size, some of which live underground. It is possible that the Arfak mouse-nosed bag lives partially burrowing underground.

Danger

The IUCN does not have enough data to indicate a degree of risk for the Arfak mouse nasal sac. Since it is only known from two discovery areas and the range is very small, the species could be "endangered" (endangered).
