Whanganui Island is the largest island in a small archipelago at the mouth of Coromandel Harbor with access to the Hauraki Gulf off the west coast of the Coromandel Peninsula on the North Island of New Zealand .
geography
The 2.83 km² island is located on the western side of Coromandel Harbor and is part of the two port entrances. While the mainland of the southwest port entrance is a good 1.3 km away, the distance to the Ruffin Peninsula on the northern side of the island, called Little Passage , is only 60 m. A few kilometers further north are the Motukawao Islands .
Most of the island is used for farming, a smaller part is forested.
history
The island was owned by an American settler until the Treaty of Waitangi was signed , after which it belonged to the British Crown; today it is private property. Bay Woolshed Bay on the sheltered south coast is a popular anchorage for sailors from Auckland .
