Surname

On January 1, 1996, the Lac La Martre settlement initially changed its name and took over the Tłįchǫ Yatiì designation Wha Tì , which also means “Marder Lake”, and on August 4, 2005, the spelling Whatì is used today .

Other traditional Tłįchǫ names for this settlement are Tsotì ('fouled water lake') and Mine Go Kola ('net fishing with houses').

history

Flag of the Whati First Nation

Traditionally, the groups lived in the climatically extremely demanding region of trapping, hunting and fishing. The North West Company therefore established a trading post in 1793 in what is now the local area. In addition to the traditional survival techniques, tourism is playing an increasing role. Therefore a fish lodge was established and tourists are attracted to watch black bears , caribou , wolves and eagles .

traffic

The place has an airfield, Whatì Airport, which is served by Air Tindi, founded in 1988 from Yellowknife. The airline's name also comes from the local language and denotes the Great Slave Lake . In summer Wathì can only be reached on foot or by plane, in winter an ice road leads to Gametì .
