Whelm was a Death Doom band founded in 2002 and disbanded in 2012 .

history

Whelm was founded in 2002. In November 2004 the group recorded their first EP The Prolouge at Soundzone Studio in Rødovre . The EP was self-published in 2004 and distributed by the Israeli independent label Totalrust Music . The label also took the track A State of Decay on the label compilation Asymmetry , which was released in 2005. First appearances followed, including at the Danish Metal Grand Prix and as a supporting act for various well-known bands such as Buried Inside , Cult of Luna , Esoteric or Saturnus . After recording their debut album A Gaze Blank and Pitiless as the Sun in spring 2012, the group ended their active career in May of the same year, before a release. The musicians decided to distribute the album digitally anyway and made it available free of charge via Bandcamp in 2013 . In 2015 the album was released in a completely revised version, mastered by Greg Chandler (Esoteric) and mixed by Thomas Pedersen ( Black Succubi ), including a new design via Aesthetic Death Records . The new edition of A Gaze Blank and Pitiless as the Sun received positive international feedback. Reviews have often been expressed about regrets about the band's breakup.

style

The musicians orientated themselves from the beginning on different musical styles. The band invokes sludge , post-hardcore and psychedelic rock . In reviews, comparisons are made to groups of funeral , death doom, post and gothic metal , namely Ahab , Neurosis , My Dying Bride and Mindrot . According to the web magazine Metal1 , “[t] tonal riffs and a massive dark atmosphere […] meet melancholy melodies and wonderfully desperate vocals.” According to Kris Clayton from Camel of Doom , the music presents the dark atmosphere of Death Doom, but contains more Elements of a raw post-metal. For this he draws the comparison to the Neurosis album Times of Grace .

An unusual element is the instrumentation that goes beyond the usual metal band line-up, including the use of a zither and a mandolin . As a further unique selling point, playing the guitar is particularly atmospheric and varied. It draws on a tremolo riffing similar to Black Metal as well as on heavy, remote and at the same time very simple riffs borrowed from shoegazing .
