The Whirlwind Inlet is an ice-covered bay at the Bowman Coast of Graham Lands on the Antarctic Peninsula . It lies between Cape Northrop and the Tent-Nunatak .
It was discovered during an overflight on December 20, 1928 by the Australian polar explorer Hubert Wilkins . Wilkins identified four large glaciers that flow into this bay and which he jointly named Whirlwind glaciers , because their radial arrangement reminded him of a radial engine from the Wright Whirlwind series made by the US manufacturer Wright Aeronautical . This name was eventually adopted for the bay. It was photographed from the air in 1940 by scientists from the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939–1941) and geodetically surveyed in 1947 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey .
