The White Bear River (English for "White Bear River") is a 40 km long river in the south of the island of Newfoundland, which belongs to the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .
River course
The White Bear River forms the outlet of the approximately 260 m high White Bear Lake . He leaves the lake on its east bank. It initially flows 10 km south-southeast and then south. The White Bear River finally flows 30 km northeast of Burgeo into the head end of White Bear Bay , a 22 km long elongated bay on the south coast of Newfoundland. 2 kilometers below White Bear Lake, an arm of Granite Lake Brook flows into the river from the north. The second branch of the river flows further north into White Bear Lake.
Hydrology
The White Bear River drains an area of approximately 780 km². About 2.5 km above the estuary there is a runoff level, which, however, only shows measured values for the months May to October. Due to dam construction on Burnt Pond River and Granite Lake Brook , both tributaries of White Bear Lake, as part of a larger hydropower project, the catchment area of the White Bear River was significantly reduced in the 1960s and 1970s. The water from the dammed Burnt Pond and Granite Lake now flows east and reaches the sea below the Bay d'Espoir hydropower station .
