history
RAF Wickenby
Today's Aerodrome is located in the northeast area of a former military airfield of the Royal Air Force , which was called Royal Air Force Station Wickenby ( RAF Wickenby for short ) during the Second World War and in the post-war period . After almost a year of construction, the station with three runways up to 1,800 m long was opened as a station for the Bomber Command . The first user was the 12th Squadron , which remained stationed here until the end of the war. She came equipped with Wellington from RAF Binbrook , but converted to the Lancaster at the end of 1942 . From the end of 1943, the 626th Squadron was the second bomber squadron here . 166 bombers were lost in over 300 missions, plus 30 accidents. After the end of the war, the flight operations with the Lancaster ended and after a short interlude of a Mosquito squadron, the 109th Squadron , the military flight operations ended at the end of 1945. The conversion to civil uses took place in the 1960s, with part of the site being given to the previous owners was retransferred and another was converted into a small civil airfield.
