Widdebrouck ( Dutch : Widdebroek ) is a hamlet in the French town of Aire-sur-la-Lys in the Pas-de-Calais department .

geography

The hamlet is located between the city center and the border with the Nord department and the municipality of Boëseghem . history

An old mention of the place comes from the year 1100 as Widebroc. Religiously, the place depended on the parish of Saint-Martin. Officially, however, she did not fall under Aries, but under the castellans of Kassel in Flanders . When French and Picardy were already spoken in Aire-sur-la-Lys , Flemish was still spoken in Widdebrouck . The Romanization of the place took place relatively late.

The place was in the 17th century in a disputed area between the French king and the Spanish Netherlands . After the French siege of Aire-sur-la-Lys in 1641, Philip IV of Spain had Fort Saint-François in Widdebrouck built in 1642.

At the end of the Ancien Régime , Widdebrouck was incorporated into the municipality of Aire-sur-la-Lys.
