from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Wiesenhaus is a listed building in the city of Querfurt in Saxony-Anhalt and the former St. Bruno chapel . In the local register of monuments it is listed as a monument under registration number 094 16862 .

General

The Wiesenhaus is located at Eselswiese, at Merseburger Straße 93 .

history

The current building was erected by Duke Christian von Sachsen-Weißenfels in 1721. For many years there was a fair after Easter on the meadow next to the building. When the area fell to Saxony, Duke Christian von Sachsen-Weißenfels regularly took part in the celebrations. Since he needed accommodation, he had the St. Bruno chapel, built in the 13th century and a pilgrimage chapel since the 14th century , converted into accommodation. One of the remains of the chapel is the Gothic west window. The upper floor served as a ballroom and the lower as a market tavern. Today the building is used as a residential building.

Donkey meadow

The naming of the meadow is not entirely clear. On the one hand it could be derived from the desert village of Eselstet , on the other hand there is also a legend of St. Bruno about the meadow . The Eselswiese was used for many years until 1957 as a festival meadow for the fair after Easter.

legend

On the Thursday after Easter in the year 1006, St. Bruno's donkey stopped at this meadow when they were on their way to proselytize the Prussians . Since this was a bad sign, Bruno turned back and considered his plan. But he recognized it as the temptation of the devil and set off anyway. Bruno never returned from the mission trip.
