Wiggle Side Chair (2009)

Wiggle Side Chair is a seat piece of furniture which of the Canadian - US architect and designer Frank Gehry was designed. As part of his Easy Edges cardboard furniture series, which he developed from 1969 to 1972 , Gehry brought out the chair in 1972. Since 1986, the Wiggle Side Chair has been manufactured and distributed by the Vitra company as one of four remaining models .

background

At the beginning of his career, Frank Gehry built conventionally. Towards the end of the 1970s, however, he changed his architectural design language by beginning to use supposedly “poor” materials such as plywood , corrugated iron and even corrugated cardboard in furniture construction . Gehry is now known for the use of unusual materials. Since 1962 he has been running his own architectural office in Los Angeles under the name Gehry Partners, LLP. During his professional career, he worked several times for the Swiss home and office furniture manufacturer Vitra. His well-known building projects include the Vitra Design Museum as well as a production hall and Vitra's headquarters in Birsfelden . In addition, between 1969 and 1972 he also designed the Easy Edges cardboard furniture series, which is extremely noise-absorbing in rooms thanks to its surface texture. In this context, the Wiggle Side Chair was also created. The aim of the Easy Edges furniture series was to create affordable furniture for everyone, but Gehry ultimately failed.

design

The Wiggle Side Chair stands out due to its aesthetic and sculptural design. Gehry has designed a piece of seating furniture that offers good seating comfort, but is also robust and stable. The seat is curved into the stand. Corrugated cardboard is used for the backrest, seat and structure, and hardboard for the cheeks. The cardboard consists of several layers, which are cut into shape. The sturdy side of the chair is made of hardboard. The surface and color are kept in a natural wood shade.

Dimensions

The total height of the chair is 87 cm and the total length is 61 cm. The seat height is 43 cm. The seat width is 35 cm.

maintenance

Since cardboard is used as the base material, the chair must not get wet. However, the box can be dusted or vacuumed. The cheeks, however, can be wiped with a soft, slightly damp cloth.
