Viktor Alexandrowitsch Pankrashkin ( Russian Виктор Александрович Панкрашкин ; English transcription: Viktor Aleksandrovich Pankrashkin ; * December 10, 1957 in Moscow ; † July 24, 1993 ibid) was a Soviet basketball player. He played on the position of the center and was a member of the Soviet national team at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul .

Career as a player

Pankrashkin only came to basketball at the age of 17. Because of his size, he was noticed as a conscript by an army basketball coach. After a short time he came to CSKA Moscow . In addition to his size, he had an enormous arm length so that he could touch the basketball ring on his heel. With these physical assets, block shots became his trademark. He won five Soviet championships in a row with CSKA. For the EM 1983 he was appointed to the national team and was third there. His training laziness and lack of discipline stood in the way of an even greater development of his career. He was only called back to the national team for the 1987 European Championship , where he won the silver medal. He celebrated his greatest triumph in 1988 when he won the gold medal at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul as a member of the Soviet national team. After 1988, ZSKA got a new coach, with whom Pankrashkin fell out. He left Moscow and went to the new Armenian club in Erewan. In terms of sport, however, his most successful period was over. As early as 1986 Pankraschkin was diagnosed with tuberculosis . He initially kept the disease a secret. The further progression of the disease made it impossible to play basketball from 1992 onwards. He died of this disease on July 24, 1993.
