Wil van Gemert (2017)

The Dutchman Wilhelmus Martinus Van Gemert (* 1960), known as Wil van Gemert , is Deputy Director of Europol from May 1, 2014 to April 30, 2018. Gemert's service time was extended by a council resolution from June 8, 2017 to April 30, 2022.

Career

Trained from 1988 along the Dutch Police Academy Gemert started his career with the police of Amsterdam . Gemert worked his way up and in 1991 specialized in financial investigations and fraud prevention . He headed a special police unit to fight public unrest. During this time, Gemert studied part-time at the University of Amsterdam and graduated with a Bachelor in Management and Police Consulting.

In 1995 he was appointed head of a multidisciplinary, national team of investigators in the Corps Landelijke Politiediensten (KLPD) fighting organized crime . In 1999 he took over the investigations into the restructuring of investigative activities in the KLPD.

On March 1, 2001, van Gemert was taken over into the top management of the KLPD as director of the criminal police and headed around 1,500 officers. Under his leadership, the KLPD was restructured into twelve operational and four supporting units by 2002. From 2003 he integrated the national police authorities into the structures of the KLPD. In addition to these tasks, van Gemert also took on leading tasks in the context of police cooperation with Europol and Interpol .

In 2004 van Gemert left the KLPD and took over the management of the national secret service in the Dutch Algemene Inlichtingen- en Veiligheidsdienst (AVID). Here, his tasks focused on the fight against terrorism , the fight against violent and politically motivated activism, as well as the anti-terror info box, a fusion center for people who are attributed to the terrorist environment.

On January 12, 2012, van Gemert also became Director of Cyber ​​Security ( information security ), where he was also responsible for the Dutch Center for IT Security ( Nationaal Cyber ​​Security Centrum , NCSC). Van Gemert took over the management of the Operations Department at Europol on May 1, 2014, where he is responsible for the European Center for Combating Cybercrime (EC3). Gemert is acting provisionally until a successor has been appointed to the former head of EC3, Troels Oerting , who left EC3 in January 2015 for a management position at Barclays .
